Here's a checklist to help you keep track of the
'big picture' issues regarding your personal
statement.
An effective personal statement should answer these
questions:
Who are you?
Why do you want to study this subject (law,
medicine, engineering, English literature, etc.)?
Why do you want to study at this school and/or in
this program?
What would you do after getting your degree?
What academic and/or professional skills would you
bring to your studies?
What personal skills would you bring to your
studies?
What’s special about you? What strengths set you
apart from other applicants?
How is your previous educational, research, and work
experience relevant to what you want to do now?
Are there any weaknesses in your application that
need to be explained (so-so grades or test scores,
lack of experience, etc.)?
Good luck! It can be a daunting task to write about yourself, but it can be done -- and has been done
by countless applicants who have preceded you. Don't let a personal statement stop you from achieving your dreams!
